Well-differentiated adipose liposarcomas are among the rare malignant tumors. In this work, we define a well-differentiated subcutaneous liposarcoma showing infiltration to bone and muscle on a 10 year old, mixed breed, female dog’s lumbar region.
Case Definition
Patient was brought to the Ada Veterinary Polyclinic with a swelling on the back and no ability to use her hind legs. Paraplegia and a significant hard swelling were observed during the patient’s clinical examination. In the neurological examination, upper motor neuron symptoms in the hind legs and loss in the pannicular reflex after T10 were revealed. In the radiological examination osteolysis was observed in T8 of prosesus spinosus and in MRI of the thoracic spinal region of the patient, a mass lesion pressing on the spine and causing destruction on the vertebral bone tissue extending into the spinal cavity located in T8-T9 in the left paravertebral region. It was determined to be a lipocyte containing tumor as a result of needle biopsy. It was decided to apply radiotherapy before the operation considering the anatomical position and pathological results. Considering the bone infiltration of the tumor, a fraction dose of 3000 cGgy 30 Gy/10 radiotherapy was administered. Following radiotherapy, mass in the paravertebral region along with its extension into the spinal cavity was removed by dorsal laminectomy and the pressure on the spine was relieved.
Discussion and Results
The case was considered worthy to be presented since well-differentiated liposarcomas are rare mesenchymal tumors. After the operation, mass macroscopically was determined to be of 7×5,5×3 cm in size, well circumscribed, soft, with a lobulated cut surface, multilobular, bright white in color.
Histopathological Findings
Microscopically, tumor contained round, poligonal, well-differentiated lipocytes and the existence of atypical lipoblasts, mitotic figures and pleomorphic cell nuclei proved well-differentiated liposarcoma. Tumor mass in some areas was necrotic and lesions developed in lipogranuloma.
